Leaps of Faith

What is the relationship between faith and art today?
“Faith is about doubt as well as conviction; about what you cannot know but can feel; about what transcends language and reason. In this sense, every work of art is a leap into the unknown.”
Modern Western art carries with it a religious legacy. Even if it has no religious function, it remains influenced by Christian motifs. This influence is reflected in symbolism and the special status attributed to works of art: art connects the senses with the supersensory, the material with the spiritual, the finite with the infinite. Its religious origins are never far away.
The way we talk about art is strongly influenced by religious oppositions: between the higher and lower, extraordinary and mundane, spiritual and material.
The exhibition explores the meaning of faith in art today. For many artists, faith has both a religious and a broader meaning: faith is about our relationship with the unknown and incomprehensible. How do we navigate the uncertainties of life and where do we find footing? Some artists come closer to the higher through their work, while others criticise the social role of the church. What unites them is a belief in the power of art to pave paths beyond the familiar.
