Raimund Girke, Klang der Stille
18 March to 26 June 2022

The recently renovated and expanded Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst (MKM) is presenting a retrospective exhibition to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Raimund Girke‘s passing, titled, Klang der Stille.

The exhibition showcases Girke’s oeuvre, which spans almost five decades and the artist’s evolution from the influence of informal abstractions, through homogeneous, quasi-monochrome linear stillness, to lively works in strong light-dark contrasts with pastose paint layers.

The result demonstrates the extent to which the artist occupied a unique position in the avant-garde art world of post-war Germany and beyond.

Klang der Stille
was compiled on the basis of works from the Raimund Girke Estate, supplemented by loans from important institutional and private collections, including the Ströher Collection. The exhibition was curated by Madeleine Girke and Director Walter Smerling, who is celebrating his 100th exhibition.

“If painting, literature, or music really have power, are intense and true, then that is like a living entity radiating an energy of its own. I move within light as matter, even better perhaps, with light as colour, light manifested in colour.” Raimund Girke, 2001.
