Sopheap Pich
Silent Restraint

Exhibition Dates: October 1, 2026 – February 20, 2027
Venue: HE Art Museum (HEM)

HE Art Museum will present a major solo exhibition by Cambodian artist Sopheap Pich, titled Silent Restraint, opening on October 1, 2026. Through elegant modern structures, Sopheap Pich incorporates an ongoing exploration of materials and form into his practice, responding to his lived reality with a restrained yet precise sculptural language. Bringing together 30 works spanning nearly three decades, the exhibition ranges from his early bamboo and rattan sculptures to recent metal and glass creations, offering a systematic overview of his artistic journey centered on materiality and form.

Silent Restraint serves as the underlying tone beneath all of the artist's forms, forming the core of the exhibition's English title. Sopheap Pich channels surge-like emotions, perceptions, and reflections on life into cohesive, self-contained sculptural shapes. Meanwhile, the Chinese title Light in the Gaps stems from his search for infinite expression within finite boundaries, creating open spaces that allow breath and light to pass through the crevices of structure. Though many of his sculptures utilize firm materials, their forms feature abundant openings, enabling light and shadow to stream through grids while capturing the subtle marks left by time.

This exhibition marks Sopheap Pich’s first major solo exhibition in China. Lingnan (Southern China) and Cambodia share a similar warm climate and lush flora—a Southern texture and temperature that find an apt resonance in his work. The artist invites viewers to encounter form and material purely through the senses, observing how light flows through the gaps of the structures to leave behind the traces of breath.
